Frequently Asked Questions

What is IT Asset Disposition?

IT Asset Disposition, or ITAD, is the structured process of securely retiring end-of-life IT equipment. A complete ITAD engagement includes secure data destruction on all storage media, documented chain of custody from the client site to final disposition, recovery of reusable equipment where appropriate, and certified recycling of non-recoverable material. ITAD differs from general electronics recycling in its emphasis on data security, audit documentation, and compliance with regulatory frameworks such as HIPAA, NIST SP 800-88, and state data protection laws.

Do you charge or pay for equipment pickup?

Front Range ITAD operates on a service-fee model. Clients pay a flat-rate pickup fee that covers labor, transport, NIST SP 800-88 data destruction, Certificate of Destruction, and chain-of-custody documentation. We do not offer per-item buyback for retired equipment. Our pricing structure reflects the cost of professional handling, secure data destruction, and documented compliance.

Are you R2 certified?

Front Range ITAD is not directly R2 certified. We partner with an R2-certified downstream recycling facility for all non-recoverable material, and we provide downstream documentation as part of every engagement. For organizations that require R2v3 certification at the primary vendor level — typically federal contractors, defense suppliers, and certain regulated industries — we recommend an R2-certified provider and are happy to make referrals. For most mid-market organizations, our combination of NIST SP 800-88 data destruction, $1M liability and cyber insurance, documented chain of custody, and R2-certified downstream handling meets internal compliance requirements.

How is data destruction handled?

All storage media received in our processing facility is wiped to NIST SP 800-88 Purge or Clear standards using ATA Secure Erase commands, with verification logs retained per device. Drives that fail verification are physically destroyed via drilling or crushing. Solid-state drives are processed using SSD-specific sanitization commands. Tape media is degaussed and physically destroyed. Physical destruction in addition to wipe is available as an add-on service for clients with heightened data sensitivity requirements.

What does a Certificate of Destruction include?

Each Certificate of Destruction is serialized and includes: client name and pickup date, asset count by category, drive serial numbers where captured during intake, sanitization method used per device class, verification status, processing date, and authorized signature. Certificates are issued within five business days of pickup and delivered electronically. Original signed copies are available on request.

Do you offer on-site or witnessed destruction?

Yes. Witnessed destruction is available as a $150 add-on service. A client representative is present at our facility during the destruction process and signs the Certificate of Destruction at the time of processing. On-site destruction at the client facility is available by quote for engagements where chain-of-custody requirements preclude transport of storage media to a third-party facility.

What kinds of equipment do you accept?

Standard IT equipment categories — desktops, laptops, servers, networking equipment, storage media, monitors, mobile devices, and related peripherals — are accepted under our standard pickup pricing. Items with negative recovery value such as CRTs, batteries, fluorescent lamps, and damaged monitors carry per-item recycling fees. Specialty equipment including solar charge controllers, off-grid power systems, and certain laboratory equipment is accepted by prior arrangement.

Do you serve areas outside Colorado Springs?

Yes. Colorado Springs and Pueblo are within our standard service area. Denver Metro, Fort Collins, Boulder, and the broader Front Range corridor are served regularly. Pickups beyond 30 miles from Colorado Springs include a distance adjustment of $1.25 per mile one-way. Service to mountain communities and Western Slope locations is available by quote.

How quickly can you schedule a pickup?

Same-business-day written quotes are standard. Same-week pickup is our standard scheduling commitment for clients in the Colorado Springs metro. Next-day pickup is available for time-sensitive engagements as an expedited service. Large-scale decommissioning projects are scheduled by mutual coordination based on project requirements.

Can you handle HIPAA-regulated equipment?

Yes, with appropriate documentation. Front Range ITAD executes Business Associate Agreements for healthcare clients subject to scope review. Our data destruction methods meet HIPAA Security Rule requirements for media sanitization, and Certificates of Destruction are formatted to satisfy compliance documentation requirements. We do not currently hold NAID AAA certification; healthcare organizations requiring NAID AAA at the primary vendor level should request a referral.

What happens to working equipment after data destruction?

Equipment that passes intake testing and can be securely wiped is prepared for refurbishment and continued use. This is consistent with current ITAD industry best practice, which prioritizes reuse over destruction wherever data security permits. Equipment that cannot be reused — due to age, damage, lack of secondary market, or client preference — is processed through our R2-certified downstream recycling partner. Clients who require destruction of all equipment regardless of working condition can specify "destroy-all" handling at the time of pickup.

Do you provide an inventory report?

A summary asset count is included on every Certificate of Destruction. A detailed serialized inventory report — listing each device with manufacturer, model, serial number, and disposition status — is available as a $75 add-on per pickup. We recommend the detailed report for clients with internal asset management systems that require closeout records.

How long do you retain records?

We retain all chain-of-custody documentation, sanitization logs, and Certificates of Destruction for a minimum of seven years. If your organization is audited or investigated regarding equipment we handled, we will provide all related records within 10 business days at no charge.

What is the difference between ITAD and asset recovery?

ITAD is the umbrella service category covering the secure end-of-life handling of IT equipment, including data destruction, chain of custody, recycling, and documentation. Asset recovery refers specifically to the portion of ITAD focused on extracting residual value from retired equipment through refurbishment and resale. Front Range ITAD operates as a service-fee ITAD provider — clients pay for the disposition service. Working equipment that holds recoverable value supports our pricing structure but does not result in client buybacks or revenue shares. Clients who specifically want to sell equipment for cash should consider a buyback-focused vendor; clients who need secure documented disposal should consider an ITAD vendor.
